On September 16th, 2021, the Ohio Criminal Sentencing Commission met and held a roundtable discussion that recognized the 25-year anniversary of the enactment of Senate Bill 2, known as Truth in Sentencing in Ohio. As a result of this discussion, a workgroup was established to refine this discussion and develop recommendations to achieve clarity and reduce the complexity of felony sentencing consistent with the Ohio Criminal Sentencing Commission’s Vision – To enhance justice; and its Mission – To ensure fair sentencing in the state of Ohio. This newly formed workgroup will be meeting on October 14th, 2021 to continue these discussions. As a member of the Ohio Criminal Sentencing Commission as its Victim Representative, and as a member of this specialized workgroup, Liz Poprocki, OVWA’s Executive Director, will be attending this October 14th meeting.
We invite you to participate in a virtual roundtable discussion on the impact of SB2 in the lives of victims/survivors and in the field of advocacy on October 5th, 2021 from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
. Your feedback will be shared with this workgroup to help shape its recommendations regarding SB2. It is very important that we include the voices of victims/survivors and advocates in this ongoing conversation so that the workgroup can fully understand the impacts, good and bad, of SB2.
This meeting will not be recorded and names will not be associated with any feedback in the event there are concerns about sharing.
For your reference, we have two documents on the history of criminal justice reform in Ohio. These are available in the weekly email sent by OVWA on 9-29-21, or you may email us at email@example.com
and we will send them to you.
