SUMMARY:ODVN - Hope & Healing from Within: Reducing the Toll of Vicarious Trauma through Somatic Techniques
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Ohio Domestic Violence Network: \nStep away from your daily responsibilities in offices\, courts\, and shelters to spend a restorative day immersed in nature at Highbanks Metro Park. This year’s event is designed as a healing space to reconnect\, reflect\, and renew through laughter\, movement\, conversation\, and hope. Together\, we’ll explore the profound effects of vicarious trauma\, a shared experience for many advocates and professionals working with trauma survivors. You’ll participate in meaningful discussions around the emotional labor of “holding space” for trauma survivors and how the body absorbs and stores this impact. You’ll leave with practical\, body-centered strategies to support self-care\, resilience\, and sustained empathy in your role as a healing presence for others. \nFacilitated by Wendy Ricks-Hoff (OVWA) and Sonia Ferencik (ODVN)\, we will focus on understanding how vicarious trauma shows up in our bodies and minds by engaging in activities that help recognize\, release\, and regulate stress and secondary trauma. Activities will include breakout groups\, ranging from drumming\, a walk in nature\, rock painting\, stillness\, and Tapping (EFT). The afternoon invites you into restorative movement led by Michele Winship\, an experienced yoga practitioner. Whether seated in a chair or on a mat\, you’ll explore gentle yoga\, somatic breathwork\, and playful movement practices. These techniques are designed to support your nervous system\, promote self-awareness\, cultivate emotional regulation\, and enhance overall well-being. Hope and healing are rooted in fostering emotional resilience\, which prevents burnout and strengthens empathy in our professional roles and personal lives.  Join us for a day of renewal\, hope\, and healing! \nLunch will be provided.  \nRegistration ends September 18th.  \nCost: Free with ODVN  membership. $50 for non-members. \nThis training is offered by the Ohio Domestic Violence Network. Please contact ODVN at training@odvn.org with any questions.

SUMMARY:ODVN - Intersection of Child Support Services and Domestic Violence Advocacy
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Ohio Domestic Violence Network: \nOne of the primary reasons that survivors of domestic violence stay with their abuser\, or return after leaving\, is the lack of financial resources to live independently. The core purpose of the child-support program\, to ensure that families receive reliably consistent support\, is ideally aligned to promote survivors’ ability to safely leave violent relationships and establish safe\, independent living situations for themselves and their children. For those who work with survivors who have questions about child support\, this training provides an overview of Ohio’s child-support program\, including the role of county child-support agencies and the work being done at the state and local levels to make the program safer for survivors of domestic violence through the Safe Access for Victims’ Economic Security (SAVES) grant.   \nThis training is offered by the Ohio Domestic Violence Network. SUMMARY:ODVN - Building Inclusive Programs for Male Survivors of Violence
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Ohio Domestic Violence Network: \nA national survey from the Bureau of Justice Statistics reports that nearly a quarter (24 percent) of domestic violence survivors are male (National Crime Victimization Survey\, 2014). However\, the image of a domestic violence survivor is typically that of a girl or woman. Stereotyped depictions and language about domestic violence can make male survivors feel left out\, unsupported\, and disbelieved when they share their experiences. In this training\, participants will explore statistics about the impacts of domestic violence on men\, including barriers to services and the ways that gender norms can impact access and service delivery. Participants will apply trauma-informed responses to working with boys and men as victims in domestic violence services and learn strategies to promote outreach and inclusivity.   \nRegistration ends July 9th.  \nCost: Free with ODVN membership. $25 for non-members. \nThis training is offered by the Ohio Domestic Violence Network. SUMMARY:ODVN - Advocacy Skills Interactive Workshop: Active Listening Techniques in Survivors Defined Advocacy
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Ohio Domestic Violence Network: \nThis advocacy skills workshop highlights active listening. Active listening is a foundational skill in advocacy when working with survivors of domestic violence. It requires attention\, empathy\, and a nonjudgmental presence. Advocates must create a safe\, supportive environment where survivors feel heard and validated. This involves not only listening to their words but also noticing non-verbal cues that may reveal deeper emotions. \nEffective advocacy goes beyond providing resources; it means empowering survivors\, respecting their autonomy\, and offering informed choices that support their healing journey. Advocates must be mindful of their own biases\, practice patience\, and approach each survivor with sensitivity to their unique experiences\, ensuring their voices are central to the process.   \nRegistration ends June 20th. \nCost: Free with a DV program\, organizational\, or individual membership. $20 for non-members. \nThis training is offered by the Ohio Domestic Violence Network. Please contact ODVN at training@odvn.org with any questions.
