SUMMARY:ODVN - Building Inclusive Programs for Male Survivors of Violence
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Ohio Domestic Violence Network: \nA national survey from the Bureau of Justice Statistics reports that nearly a quarter (24 percent) of domestic violence survivors are male (National Crime Victimization Survey\, 2014). However\, the image of a domestic violence survivor is typically that of a girl or woman. Stereotyped depictions and language about domestic violence can make male survivors feel left out\, unsupported\, and disbelieved when they share their experiences. In this training\, participants will explore statistics about the impacts of domestic violence on men\, including barriers to services and the ways that gender norms can impact access and service delivery. Participants will apply trauma-informed responses to working with boys and men as victims in domestic violence services and learn strategies to promote outreach and inclusivity.   \nRegistration ends July 9th.  \nCost: Free with ODVN membership. $25 for non-members. \nThis training is offered by the Ohio Domestic Violence Network. Please contact ODVN at training@odvn.org with any questions.

SUMMARY:ODVN - Advocacy Skills Interactive Workshop: Active Listening Techniques in Survivors Defined Advocacy
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Ohio Domestic Violence Network: \nThis advocacy skills workshop highlights active listening. Active listening is a foundational skill in advocacy when working with survivors of domestic violence. It requires attention\, empathy\, and a nonjudgmental presence. Advocates must create a safe\, supportive environment where survivors feel heard and validated. This involves not only listening to their words but also noticing non-verbal cues that may reveal deeper emotions. \nEffective advocacy goes beyond providing resources; it means empowering survivors\, respecting their autonomy\, and offering informed choices that support their healing journey. Advocates must be mindful of their own biases\, practice patience\, and approach each survivor with sensitivity to their unique experiences\, ensuring their voices are central to the process.   \nRegistration ends June 20th. \nCost: Free with a DV program\, organizational\, or individual membership. $20 for non-members. \nThis training is offered by the Ohio Domestic Violence Network. Please contact ODVN at training@odvn.org with any questions.

SUMMARY:ODVN - Reproductive Health & Supporting Safety for Pregnant Survivors
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Ohio Domestic Violence Network: \nJoin ODVN and the Ohio Alliance to End Sexual Violence for this important training session\, free and open to anyone! Under the large spectrum of power and control behaviors that are discussed within the anti-violence field\, reproductive coercion isn’t discussed as frequently. Some of that may be due to our own experience or values with comprehensive sexuality education. In this training\, we will discuss some of the key components around healthy sexuality education\, discuss the various tactics people use to control their partner’s sexual health and autonomy\, and outline ways that staff can effectively screen and respond to signs of reproductive coercion or support survivors who are pregnant. \nRegistration ends May 22nd.  \nThis training is offered by the Ohio Domestic Violence Network. SUMMARY:ODVN - Youth Advocacy Caucus: Navigating Mandated Visitations with Youth Survivors
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Ohio Domestic Violence Network: \nYouth Advocacy Caucus: Navigating Mandated Visitations with Youth Survivors \nWhen a Survivor as a parent leaves a violent relationship\, the family often must navigate visitation with the abusive parent\, all while dealing with ongoing safety concerns. The emotional and physical toll on both parents and their children\, as they struggle to balance safety and normalcy\, is significant. This caucus aims to raise awareness among advocates about the emotional strain children and teens experience during visitation so they can better support families in these situations. \nThe spring Youth Advocacy Caucus will focus on the challenges surrounding post-separation violence\, trauma reactions\, and youth visitation\, exploring the complexities that impact both children\, teens\, and their (survivor) parents. Join a panel of experts as they share insights and strategies for supporting parents and young people through these difficult and complex experiences that too often bring unfamiliar risks\, stress\, and uncertainty. \nRegistration ends May 16th. \nThis training is offered by the Ohio Domestic Violence Network. Please contact ODVN at training@odvn.org with any questions.

SUMMARY:ODVN - Addressing Substance Use & Mental Health with Harm Reduction Strategies
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Ohio Domestic Violence Network: \nAddressing Substance Use & Mental Health with Harm Reduction Strategies \nSubstance use and mental health are highly prevalent concerns among survivors of gender-based violence. This training will provide participants with an overview of the intersection of substance use\, mental health\, and trauma and how Harm Reduction principles and practices offer needed accommodations for survivors seeking safety from abuse. These practices acknowledge that drug use/abuse is a part of life and seek to reduce the harmful effects for survivors. They look at drug use on a continuum of severity and need and attempt to connect individuals with a sense of community without an “abstinence only” narrative. In addition\, participants will learn about stigma reduction in community services and how to give power and control back to the survivors. \nRegistration ends April 3rd.  \nCost: Free for ODVN Members (ODVN Member Program or Individual/Organizational Membership); $25 for Non-ODVN Members. \nThis training is offered by the Ohio Domestic Violence Network. SUMMARY:ODVN - Advocacy Skills Interactive Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Ohio Domestic Violence Network: \nAttending Skills\, Tone\, and Non-Verbals to Bolster Engagement in Voluntary Services\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn domestic violence programming\, survivor-defined advocacy and voluntary engagement are crucial to the success of serving survivors. This workshop will also review how awareness of cultural differences may influence communication styles and how to adapt approaches for genuine engagement.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCost: Free for ODVN Members (ODVN Member Program or Individual/Organizational Membership); $20 for Non-ODVN Members. \nDeadline to register: February 21\, 2025 \nThis event is offered by the Ohio Domestic Violence Network.
