This workshop will explore the “tone of your caregiving” and reflect on how our presence impacts those we support. Through discussions on secondary trauma exposure\, grounding and regulation techniques\, and common barriers to co-regulation and rapport-building\, attendees will gain greater insight into their caregiving role. This year’s event is designed as a healing space to reconnect\, reflect\, and renew through laughter\, movement\, conversation\, and hope. Together\, we’ll explore the profound effects of vicarious trauma\, a shared experience for many advocates and professionals working with trauma survivors. You’ll participate in meaningful discussions around the emotional labor of “holding space” for trauma survivors and how the body absorbs and stores this impact. You’ll leave with practical\, body-centered strategies to support self-care\, resilience\, and sustained empathy in your role as a healing presence for others. \nFacilitated by Wendy Ricks-Hoff (OVWA) and Sonia Ferencik (ODVN)\, we will focus on understanding how vicarious trauma shows up in our bodies and minds by engaging in activities that help recognize\, release\, and regulate stress and secondary trauma. Activities will include breakout groups\, ranging from drumming\, a walk in nature\, rock painting\, stillness\, and Tapping (EFT). The afternoon invites you into restorative movement led by Michele Winship\, an experienced yoga practitioner. Whether seated in a chair or on a mat\, you’ll explore gentle yoga\, somatic breathwork\, and playful movement practices. These techniques are designed to support your nervous system\, promote self-awareness\, cultivate emotional regulation\, and enhance overall well-being. This training is designed specifically for advocates with at least three years of experience in the domestic violence field\, or 1 year of experience and full completion of the Domestic Violence Advocacy Fundamentals training series. In this training\, advocates will deepen their skills to support survivors through complex situations and systemic barriers. Advocates who attend this training will learn foundational principles for applying an anti-oppressive lens to services\, tools for assessing fidelity to the Trauma-Informed Care model\, strategies for safety planning with complex and high lethality cases\, and steps to take your advocacy to the community and policy levels. SUMMARY:ODVN - Advocacy Skills Interactive Workshop: Understanding Trauma and Trauma Responses
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Ohio Domestic Violence Network: \nThis foundational workshop equips domestic violence advocates with the knowledge and tools to recognize and respond to trauma in individuals who have experienced abuse. Advocates will gain an understanding of how trauma affects the brain\, body\, and nervous system and how these impacts influence a survivor’s behavior\, emotions\, and decision-making\, particularly in the context of ongoing abuse.  Additionally\, we will explore trauma responses such as avoidance\, hypervigilance\, and emotional numbing\, and learn how to respond with empathy and support. \nRegistration ends August 14th.  \nCost: Free with; $20 for non-members. \nThis training is offered by the Ohio Domestic Violence Network. DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Ohio Domestic Violence Network: \nODVN invites you to get your hands dirty (in the best way) as we explore how gardening\, play\, art\, and creativity can help kids and families heal\, connect\, and thrive. Whether you’re planting herbs in a windowsill or dreaming up a full-blown garden space\, there’s room for growth\, yours and theirs. \nHosted by Sonia Ferencik and joined by experts from KidsGardening.org\, this event will show you how to start garden-based healing spaces with trauma-informed guidance\, even with limited resources\, using container gardening\, sensory herbs\, and therapeutic nature activities. You’ll learn how to tap into funding opportunities\, spark donor interest\, and bring survivors\, your staff\, and community into the process. We’ll also dive into expressive activities like family groups like parachute play\, bubble fun\, breathwork\, and other creative ways advocates are supporting children\, teens\, and families in DV/SV programs. Whether you’re a seasoned youth advocate or just starting to plant the seeds of an idea\, this caucus will leave you inspired\, equipped\, and ready to grow something beautiful. \nFree.
