SUMMARY:OVWA Quarterly Member Training: The Impact of Culture: Advocating for Military-Connected Survivors and Community Partnerships
DESCRIPTION:“Culture” describes “the way of life of a particular people or society\,” that encompasses distinctive customs\, beliefs\, attitudes\, and experiences. Military culture boasts strength\, unity\, sacrifice\, and camaraderie to ensure successful missions\, but what happens when there is victimization? SUMMARY:OVWA Special Webinar Wednesday - Brain Injury\, Strangulation\, CARE and Advocacy for Victims of Crime
DESCRIPTION:In the first community-based study of its kind\, published in 2019\, researchers from Ohio State and the Ohio Domestic Violence Network found that 81% of women who have been abused and sought help have suffered a head injury\, and 83% have been strangled. Nearly half of the women in the study had been hit in the head too many times to remember\, and more than half were choked at least a few times. Some said they lived through both\, often concurrently. \nPlease join Rachel Ramirez\, LISW-S\, RASS\, Director of Health and Disability Programs and the Founder of the Center on Partner-Inflicted Brain Injury at the Ohio Domestic Violence Network (ODVN)\, and Julienne Long\, PhD Forensic Psychology and Advocacy Coordinator for the City of Columbus Prosecuting Attorney’s Office\, to take a deep dive into the impact of these injuries on victims of crime and their ability to heal\, and best practices in supporting victims of crime who have experienced these injuries within both community- and systems-based advocacy. \nCARE (Connect\, Acknowledge\, Respond\, Evaluate) is an intervention based on survivors’ experiences and what service providers identified as needed to address brain injury and complex mental health concerns in advocacy practice\, and was developed in partnership with OSU and the Center for Partner-Inflicted Brain Injury. \nCARE is about connecting with survivors and acknowledging that blunt force head trauma\, strangulation and other types of oxygen deprivation\, mental health issues\, and suicide ideation are widespread among this population\, and responding to the needs of survivors in a way that is accessible given the interplay of trauma\, mental health\, and brain injury concerns. We will learn about resources that advocates and partner agencies can use to implement CARE\, including materials to address head trauma\, strangulation\, and their impact using simple language. \nIf you require accommodations to attend this training\, please email us at info@ovwa.org by 5-28-24. \nThis training is open to all. \nThis training is preapproved for CEUs from OAN\, NACP\, and the State of Ohio CSWMFT Board.

SUMMARY:Franklin County Court of Common Pleas\, Domestic Relations - Animal Abuse and Domestic Violence
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Franklin County Court of Common Pleas\, Domestic Relations: \nA Matter of Community and Family Safety: Understanding and Addressing the Interconnections Between Animal Abuse and Interpersonal Violence \nIntroductory Training \nThe human-animal bond is a mutually beneficial and dynamic relationship between people and animals that contributes to the health and wellbeing of both. Unfortunately\, that same bond can be exploited and weaponized in abusive human relationships. Countless studies over the past forty years have examined and documented “the Link” between animal cruelty and various forms of interpersonal violence\, namely domestic or interpersonal violence\, child maltreatment\, and elder abuse. This training will provide fundamental education on the Link and will delve into the ways that state laws\, including Ohio laws\, and court systems acknowledge and respond to the Link. \nWhat Court Officers Can Do to Safeguard the Human-Animal Bond and Address the LINK in Domestic Relations Cases \nJudges handling domestic relations cases have unique opportunities as well as obligations to safeguard all the members of a household — pets and humans — and to promote the wellbeing of each. This presentation will introduce juc„cial officers and other legal practitioners to recommended practices in these cases. It will also engage participants in action planning on steps to implement recommended practice in Franklin County. \nLocation: Franklin County Government Center\, 369 S High St\, Columbus\, OH 43215 | First Floor\, Room 3 \nThis FREE event is hosted by the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas\, Domestic Relations. See the full flyer here. \nPlease RSVP to sheree_yates@fccourts.org by May 3\, 2024.
