SUMMARY:Justice Clearinghouse - An Introduction to Domestic Violence\, Traumatic Brain Injury\, and Strangulation (Ohio Focused)
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Justice Clearinghouse:\n\n\nWebinar: An Introduction to Domestic Violence\, Traumatic Brain Injury\, and Strangulation (Ohio Focused)   \nDomestic violence often involves physical violence targeted at the head\, neck\, and face–through blows to the head or strangulation. Though this has been common knowledge for decades\, brain injuries caused by this violence are unacknowledged\, rarely identified\, and almost never immediately treated. We will define and describe partner-inflicted brain injury and discuss the complicated and nuanced intersection of coercive control and domestic violence dynamics\, the psychological trauma caused by domestic violence\, and the neurological damage caused by brain injury. Partner-inflicted brain injury can cause physical\, emotional\, and cognitive consequences that can impact every area of a survivor’s life–including their ability to successfully access and participate in your agency’s services. This session will share what we have learned in Ohio about brain injuries from violence and the tremendous need to raise awareness of brain injury as a significant impact of domestic violence and prepare agencies that serve survivors to better understand brain injury. \n\nThis webinar is hosted by Justice Clearinghouse.

SUMMARY:ODVN - Child Witnesses: The Impact of Domestic Violence
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Ohio Domestic Violence Network: \nChild Witnesses: The Impact of Domestic Violence\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChildren and teenagers exposed to domestic violence have many worries\, fears\, and hopes in their daily lives. In 2022\, Ohio’s domestic violence programs reported that nearly 5\,000 children were residing in their shelters and in hotels with their parents. These are the children known to domestic violence programs\, yet there are many more living behind closed doors\, witnessing domestic violence and navigating mandated visitation.  Advocates working in shelters\, community outreach\, prevention\, schools\, and other settings must recognize the needs of child witnesses and their parents to support them as they navigate through their days and show their resilience. \nJoin Sonia Ferencik as she presents on how exposure to a parent/partner who abuses creates an environment of chronic stress and unpredictability. This training will deepen your knowledge\, enhance your engagement skills\, and increase trauma-responsive strategies to support children and teenagers. Content will include an overview of child development\, trauma reactions\, and the complexities of working with children and teenagers using a mind-body trauma-responsive approach.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresenter: Sonia Ferencik\, LISW-S\, RA\, 200-hr CYT\, Youth Advocacy and Trauma Informed Services Coordinator\, ODVN \nCost: Free for ODVN Members (ODVN Member Program or Individual/Organizational Membership); $25 for Non-ODVN Members. \nDeadline to register: April 11\, 2024. \nThis training is offered by the Ohio Domestic Violence Network. SUMMARY:OVWA Webinar Wednesday: Competency\, NGRI\, and Ohio’s Forensic Evaluation Centers and Monitoring Program
DESCRIPTION:Please join Dr. Lisa Gordish\, Director of Forensic Services\, and Tara Schultz\, Assistant Director of Forensic Services\, Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services\, to learn about the criminal justice process for defendants who may have competency and/or sanity issues that impact their court process in the state of Ohio. When a defendant files a motion to be evaluated for competency to stand trial or enters a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity (NGRI)\, the pathway the case takes through the court system may be very different than a typical case. Working with survivors during this process can be difficult to explain and there may be many unknowns. Attendees will learn about the forensic mental health system: the pathway for competency evaluation; services for restoration; court procedures for disposition of NGRI cases as well as certain Incompetent to Stand Trial\, Unrestorable (ISTU-CJ) cases that will remain under criminal court jurisdiction; and finally procedures for on-going criminal court commitment that dictates what treatment and monitoring for these cases will be. \nIf you require accommodations to attend this training\, please email info@ovwa.org no later than one week prior to the webinar date. \nThis training is preapproved for CEU’s from OAN\, NACP\, and the State of Ohio CSWMFT Board.

SUMMARY:ODVN - Cultural Considerations for Supporting Survivors Who Use Substances
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Ohio Domestic Violence Network: \nCultural Considerations for Supporting Survivors Who Use Substances\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSubstance dependence is a complex and lifelong struggle that can have devastating effects for the individual and their families. Under the best of circumstances\, seeking recovery assistance can be challenging\, and the barriers to accessing and successfully completing treatment can seem insurmountable. SUMMARY:ODVN - Intersections of Partner-Inflicted Brain Injury\, Oppression\, and Racism: Supporting Survivors of Color
DESCRIPTION:  \nHosted by the Ohio Domestic Violence Network: \nIntersections of Partner-Inflicted Brain Injury\, Oppression\, and Racism: Supporting Survivors of Color \nPlease join ODVN for this free\, virtual training. \n\n\nSurvivors of color have systemic barriers to accessing all types of services and are disproportionally impacted by challenges with access to housing\, employment\, social services\, and other social determinants of health. SUMMARY:OVWA Quarterly Training: Marsy’s Law Implementation and Advocacy Best Practices
DESCRIPTION:Please join Elizabeth Well\, Legal Director\, Ohio Crime Victim Justice Center (OCVJC)\, Valerie Hooper\, R.A.\,C.A.\, Unit 107\, Victim Advocate/Offender Watch\, Supervisor\, Delaware County Sheriff’s Office\, Operations Division\, and Wendy Ricks Hoff\, BA\,RA CA\, TRCC\, OVWA Program Director\, to discuss best practices for systems advocacy and the implementation of Marsy’s Law. While crime victim rights have been in place since 1992\, Marsy’s Law and the passage of the constitutional amendment based on Marsy’s Law increased the strength of many existing laws as well as instituted additional mandates on many systems professionals. While criminal justice systems bear the bulk of the responsibility for crime victim rights mandates\, both systems- and community-based advocates may be in the position of ensuring these rights are protected and easily accessible. This training will identify the current legal requirements\, common difficulties in the implementation within the system\, and best practices and ethical considerations for advocates in balancing systems advocacy with crime victim rights advocacy in the criminal justice system. \nIf you require accommodations to attend this training\, please email info@ovwa.org no later than one week prior to the webinar date. \nThis training is preapproved for CEU’s from OAN\, NACP\, and the State of Ohio CSWMFT Board. \nRegister now!

SUMMARY:OVWA Webinar Wednesday: The Ohio Crisis Response Team
DESCRIPTION:Mass violence has become more frequent in our society and whether it be intentional mass murder\, automobile accidents\, or natural disasters\, crisis responders through the Ohio Crisis Response Team have been responding to incidents and providing services to communities since 1996. OCRT is a statewide crisis response team which uses the NOVA model of crisis response which utilizes trained volunteers from all backgrounds to provide crisis response and assistance to the state of Ohio and as a part of the National Crisis Response teams organized by NOVA. Due to the unique trauma and tragedies that impact communities\, advocates throughout Ohio have been actively involved with OCRT since its inception. In fact\, the team was founded by three victim advocacy leaders (and OVWA leaders and members) in Ohio who continue to manage the team today. This  training will provide information about OCRT\, practical crisis response skills\, and steps to consider when faced with a disaster in your own community. \nIf you require accommodations to attend this training\, please email info@ovwa.org no later than one week prior to the webinar date.
