SUMMARY:OVWA Retreat: Hope & Healing from Within: Reducing the Toll of Vicarious Trauma by Practicing Somatic Techniques
DESCRIPTION:This IN-PERSON event is designed as a healing space to reconnect\, reflect\, and renew through laughter\, movement\, conversation\, and hope. Together\, we’ll explore the profound effects of vicarious trauma\, a shared experience for many advocates and professionals working with trauma survivors. You’ll participate in meaningful discussions around the emotional labor of “holding space” for trauma survivors and how the body absorbs and stores this impact. You’ll leave with practical\, body-centered strategies to support self-care\, resilience\, and sustained empathy in your role as a healing presence for others. \nFacilitated by Sonia Ferencik from ODVN and Wendy Ricks-Hoff of OVWA\, we will focus on understanding how vicarious trauma shows up in our bodies and minds by engaging in activities that help recognize\, release\, and regulate stress and secondary trauma. Hope and healing are rooted in fostering emotional resilience\, which prevents burnout and strengthens empathy in our professional roles and personal lives.  Join us for a day of renewal\, hope\, and healing! \nThis member-only event is FREE to attend\, with space limited to 30 attendees. \nLocation: Highbanks MetroPark\, 9466 Columbus Pike\, Lewis Center\, OH\, 43035 \n  \n\n  \nThis training is applicable for CEUs from OAN\, NACP\, and preapproved for counselors\, social workers\, and marriage & family therapists through the State of Ohio CSWMFT Board. If you need accommodations to attend this training\, please email us at info@ovwa.org at least one week before the event date.

SUMMARY:ODVN - Invisible Injuries: Traumatic Brain Injury\, Strangulation and Domestic Violence
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Ohio Domestic Violence Network\nDomestic violence often involves blows to the head\, neck\, or face and strangulation—yet the resulting brain injuries are still frequently overlooked and untreated. This leads to significant gaps: survivors may struggle with unrecognized injuries\, professionals may miss opportunities to offer effective support\, and systems may not account for the impact of trauma and domestic violence. This webinar will share findings from Ohio’s groundbreaking research on partner-inflicted brain injury\, including data from domestic violence programs and police calls. We will define partner-inflicted brain injury\, review the realities of concussion and strangulation\, outline common signs and symptoms\, and introduce CARE (Connect\, Acknowledge\, Respond\, Evaluate)\, an evidence-based framework for supporting survivors.  \nCost: Free for all \nRegistration ends March 13th  \nThis training is offered by the Ohio Domestic Violence Network. Please contact ODVN at training@odvn.org with any questions. \n \n

SUMMARY:ODVN - Starting Anew: Strategies and Support for Survivors Facing Bankruptcy
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Ohio Domestic Violence Network\nAdvocates often support survivors who are facing overwhelming debt\, housing instability\, or damaged credit\, often alongside family law cases. Bankruptcy may be one possible tool\, but it can feel confusing or intimidating\, especially when economic abuse and survivor safety are part of the picture. This legal caucus will provide advocates with a basic overview of bankruptcy\, how it may intersect with family law cases\, and when a referral to a bankruptcy attorney may be helpful. The focus will be on strengthening advocate understanding and collaboration with attorneys while continuing to provide survivor-centered\, safety-informed support. \nODVN Legal Caucus meetings are free and open to everyone. \nThis meeting is offered by the Ohio Domestic Violence Network. SUMMARY:ODVN - Seeing Beyond the Behavior: A Trauma-Informed Look at Youth Exposed to a Battering Partner/Parent
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Ohio Domestic Violence Network\nBehaviors are messages that help adults determine appropriate ways to support children. Experiences of trauma affect children and teens in the present moment\, shaping how they think\, feel\, and respond. This session challenges the outdated belief that certain behaviors are merely attention-seeking or manipulative\, and equips advocates with practical\, trauma-informed strategies to reduce secondary victimization and better support child and teen survivors. \nAdvocates will explore how exposure to domestic violence can create toxic stress\, trauma\, grief\, and fear\, and how batterers impact both children and adult victims. Advocates will gain a foundational understanding of how children may respond cognitively\, developmentally\, and emotionally to living with a batterer as a parent\, and how environments can sometimes exacerbate stress. Trauma-informed resources for children and adult victims will be shared to support families holistically. \nCost: Free for members (DV member program\, Organizational\, Individual); $25 for non-members \nRegistration ends March 26th  \nThis training is offered by the Ohio Domestic Violence Network. Please contact ODVN at training@odvn.org with any questions. \n \n

SUMMARY:OVWA Webinar Wednesday: Aligning Narratives: Ethical Storytelling for Education and Outreach
DESCRIPTION:Storytelling is a powerful tool in victim advocacy\, shaping how communities learn\, engage\, and understand survivors’ experiences. This webinar invites participants to reflect on the stories they use in education\, outreach\, prevention\, advocacy\, and fundraising\, and to consider how those narratives can either support all survivors or unintentionally cause harm. Together\, we’ll explore the pedagogical strengths of storytelling\, examine common ethical challenges in survivor‑centered narratives\, and introduce a practical strategy for aligning storytelling practices with the field’s core values and ethical standards. Participants will be able to identify effective uses of storytelling in advocacy\, describe key ethical issues related to survivor narratives\, and align their own storytelling approaches with the ethical standards and values that guide the field. \nPresenter(s): Elliott Fullenkamp\, Manager of Training & Technical Assistance\, OAESV \n  \n\nThis training is applicable for CEUs from OAN\, NACP\, and preapproved for counselors\, social workers\, and marriage & family therapists through the State of Ohio CSWMFT Board. If you need accommodations to attend this training\, please email us at info@ovwa.org at least one week before the webinar date.
