SUMMARY:ODVN - Court Advocacy Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Ohio Domestic Violence Network: \nCourt Advocacy Roundtable\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA court advocate can play an important role in a domestic violence survivor’s journey through the legal system\, not only by navigating the system but also by providing support and safety tips to the survivor. Often\, advocates focus on the legal system and forget to check in with survivors about other needs they may have\, leaving survivors with more stress than they had before their involvement with the legal system. This virtual roundtable will help advocates see the importance of supporting survivors with their legal needs\, while also understanding why it’s important to identify challenges survivors face when involved in the justice system. This training includes presenters and a panel of victim service professionals that will provide advocates with an understanding on the core meaning of legal advocacy\, how to assist survivors in navigating the civil and criminal justice systems\, and how to effectively partner with other victim service providers in their community. \nCost: Free \nDeadline to Register: Monday\, October 14\, 2024. \nThis event is offered by the Ohio Domestic Violence Network. SUMMARY:OVWA Webinar Wednesday: Trauma-Informed Safety Planning and Lethality Assessments - How to Quickly and Effectively Assist Domestic Violence Survivors in Assessing Personal Safety
DESCRIPTION:Please join OVWA and Alicia Williamson\, MSW\, LSW\, Assistant Deputy Director with the Ohio Domestic Violence Network\, to discuss essential trauma-informed safety planning skills and the use of lethality assessments for domestic violence survivors. Advocates working within systems are often providing emergency services to victims of domestic violence and\, while obtaining safety measures through the criminal justice system can be a necessity\, effective safety planning involves safety in all situations while not relying on an offender’s adherence to court orders. Attendees will learn how to quickly and effectively help a survivor assess their physical and emotional safety and develop preparation and planning for potential escalations of violence. There has been much discussion in the utilization and development of lethality assessments as a tool for safety awareness and planning\, and attendees will learn considerations for administering lethality assessments both within and outside of the criminal justice system. \nIf you require accommodations to attend this training please email us at info@ovwa.org no later than one week prior to the training. \nThis training is preapproved for CEU’s from OAN\, NACP\, and the State of Ohio CSWMFT Board.

SUMMARY:OVWA Webinar Wednesday: The Victim Offender Dialogue Program of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (ODRC)/Office of Victim Services (OVS)
DESCRIPTION:Please join OVWA\, Chrystal Pounds Alexander\, Administrator\, and Jennifer Conkle\, Victim Advocate\, ODRC Office of Victim Services\, to learn about the Victim Offender Dialogue program (VOD)\, one of the many services offered in support of victims of crime in the Victim Services Office of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction. VOD is a process in which the victim of a violent crime can request to meet with the incarcerated individual who caused them harm. During this process\, the offender who committed the offense(s) and the crime survivor may meet\, focusing on the harm done to the victim\, and the offender’s responsibility in the harm caused. Ohio is 1 of 34 states that offer a corrections-based VOD program\, a form of restorative justice. The Victim-Offender Dialogue program is a highly sensitive and time-consuming process that is confidential in nature and is not recommended for everyone.  For those who decide to participate in this program\, it can be a vital step toward healing for both the requesting victim and the incarcerated person (IP). Attendees will learn how VOD can support victims of crime in their healing\, will understand the ethical considerations for survivors and IP’s participating in VOD\, and what to expect when working with survivors who may choose to participate in VOD. \nIf you require accommodations to attend this training\, please email info@ovwa.org no later than one week prior to the webinar date. \nThis training is preapproved for CEU’s from OAN\, NACP\, and the State of Ohio CSWMFT Board.
