Participants will identify strategies for implementing voluntary service requirements in shelter programs\, as well as policies that violate the voluntary service requirements of federal funders. Participants will apply the concepts of Trauma-Informed Care to scenarios that navigate challenges common to shelter programs\, such as curfews\, supporting children and parenting\, mental health concerns with survivors\, and low program engagement. Trainings are geared toward mental health professionals\, victim advocates\, law enforcement personnel\, and others who confront human crisis in their work. This training will provide participants with an overview of the intersection of substance use\, mental health\, and trauma and how Harm Reduction principles and practices offer needed accommodations for survivors seeking safety from abuse. These practices acknowledge that drug use/abuse is a part of life and seek to reduce the harmful effects for survivors. They look at drug use on a continuum of severity and need and attempt to connect individuals with a sense of community without an “abstinence only” narrative. SUMMARY:ODVN - Advocacy Skills Interactive Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Ohio Domestic Violence Network: \nAttending Skills\, Tone\, and Non-Verbals to Bolster Engagement in Voluntary Services\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn domestic violence programming\, survivor-defined advocacy and voluntary engagement are crucial to the success of serving survivors. Building trust and fostering genuine connections with survivors\, especially those who may be experiencing trauma responses\, grief\, and loss\, requires more than just words. The way advocates listen\, speak\, and present themselves can significantly impact the level of engagement and trust built. Advocates who attend this workshop will practice how to use attending skills\, tone of voice\, and non-verbal cues effectively to create a welcoming\, supportive environment that encourages survivors to participate and potentially invest in the services offered. \nThrough interactive learning\, group discussion and scenarios\, participants will (1) learn active listening techniques that demonstrate empathy\, presence\, and understanding\, helping to foster deeper connections with clients; (2) practice the power of using tone to communicate warmth\, support\, and professionalism; and (3) explore the role of non-verbal communication with body language\, facial expressions\, posture\, and eye contact when building rapport with survivors. This workshop will also review how awareness of cultural differences may influence communication styles and how to adapt approaches for genuine engagement.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCost: Free for ODVN Members (ODVN Member Program or Individual/Organizational Membership); $20 for Non-ODVN Members. \nDeadline to register: February 21\, 2025 \nThis event is offered by the Ohio Domestic Violence Network.
