SUMMARY:ODVN - Skills & Approaches to Supporting Youth and Parents Around Substance Use Issues
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Ohio Domestic Violence Network\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin ODVN for an engaging and practical training designed specifically for advocates working with families navigating both domestic violence and substance use. Led in a conversational\, Q&A-style format\, this session creates space for honest discussions about the complexities of supporting survivors and their children in communal shelter settings and beyond. Participants will explore foundational skills like harm reduction\, motivational interviewing\, and trauma-informed approaches\, alongside everyday challenges advocates face\, such as stigma\, emotional support planning for children\, and supporting parents in active use or recovery. Participants will receive practical tools\, including a one-pager with conversation guides\, and engage in open discussions about bias\, parenting in communal spaces\, and the emotional connections between trauma and substance use. Learn how to support survivors who are using substances\, co-support children in shared spaces\, or respond when staff have differing viewpoints. \nCost: Free for members (DV member program\, Organizational\, Individual); $25 for non-members \nRegistration ends October 23rd. \nThis training is offered by the Ohio Domestic Violence Network. SUMMARY:ODVN - Advocacy Skills Interactive Workshop: De-escalation Strategies: Understanding Co-regulation & Soothing Skills
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Ohio Domestic Violence Network\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEmpathy and active listening are essential trauma-informed approaches that develop through intentional skill-building. Similarly\, co-regulation —the ability to support others in managing their emotions —is strengthened through ongoing learning and practice. Advocates who can recognize and manage their internal responses are better equipped to create emotionally safe spaces for youth and adult survivors of domestic violence. This workshop will explore the “tone of your caregiving” and reflect on how our presence impacts those we support. Through discussions on secondary trauma exposure\, grounding and regulation techniques\, and common barriers to co-regulation and rapport-building\, attendees will gain greater insight into their caregiving role. Attendees will leave with three personalized strategies to support their well-being and strengthen their capacity to care for others with empathy and resilience. \nCost: Free with a DV program\, organizational\, or individual membership. $20 for non-members. \nRegistration ends October 24th. \nThis training is offered by the Ohio Domestic Violence Network. Please contact ODVN at training@odvn.org with any questions. \n \n
