ODVN – Starting Anew: Strategies and Support for Survivors Facing Bankruptcy

Advocates often support survivors who are facing overwhelming debt, housing instability, or damaged credit, often alongside family law cases. Bankruptcy may be one possible tool, but it can feel confusing or intimidating, especially when economic abuse and survivor safety are part of the picture. This legal caucus will provide advocates with a basic overview of bankruptcy, how it may intersect with family law cases, and when a referral to a bankruptcy attorney may be helpful. The focus will be on strengthening advocate understanding and collaboration with attorneys while continuing to provide survivor-centered, safety-informed support.
