OVWA Webinar Wednesday: Competency, NGRI, and Ohio’s Forensic Evaluation Centers and Monitoring Program
April 10, 2024 @ 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm
Please join Dr. Lisa Gordish, Director of Forensic Services, and Tara Schultz, Assistant Director of Forensic Services, Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, to learn about the criminal justice process for defendants who may have competency and/or sanity issues that impact their court process in the state of Ohio. When a defendant files a motion to be evaluated for competency to stand trial or enters a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity (NGRI), the pathway the case takes through the court system may be very different than a typical case. Working with survivors during this process can be difficult to explain and there may be many unknowns. Attendees will learn about the forensic mental health system: the pathway for competency evaluation; services for restoration; court procedures for disposition of NGRI cases as well as certain Incompetent to Stand Trial, Unrestorable (ISTU-CJ) cases that will remain under criminal court jurisdiction; and finally procedures for on-going criminal court commitment that dictates what treatment and monitoring for these cases will be.
If you require accommodations to attend this training, please email info@ovwa.org no later than one week prior to the webinar date.
This training is preapproved for CEU’s from OAN, NACP, and the State of Ohio CSWMFT Board….
