OVWA Quarterly Member Training: The Impact of Culture: Advocating for Military-Connected Survivors and Community Partnerships

June 7, 2024 @ 12:30 pm2:30 pm

“Culture” describes “the way of life of a particular people or society,” that encompasses distinctive customs, beliefs, attitudes, and experiences. Military culture boasts strength, unity, sacrifice, and camaraderie to ensure successful missions, but what happens when there is victimization? How does military culture and historical influences impact survivors? Please join Dr. Ava Ramirez-Ene, U.S. Marine Corps Veteran and the Military Coordinated Community Response (CCR) Senior Program Manager at the National Organization of Victim Advocacy (NOVA) as we explore the impact of culture and historical trauma on relationships, highlight unique dynamics and barriers that military-connected survivors face, and incite dialogue on addressing conflicts between military and civilian community partnerships. This presentation will increase awareness of military culture, provide support on establishing ethical and culturally responsive partnerships, and provoke critical thinking by discussing social psychological and historical influences fueling “us v. them” between military, civilian, law enforcement, and BIPoC Communities. It will benefit civilian and military professionals in strengthening their coordinated community response with renewed empathy and understanding to improve support and advocacy for all DVSAS survivors. Attendees will:

–Understand the impact of culture and historical trauma on relationships between military, civilian, law enforcement, and BIPoC Communities. –Identify unique dynamics and barriers of military culture impacting survivors of DVSAS. –Address common conflicts between military and civilian community partnerships. –Explore a collective approach to building Military/Civilian Coordinated Community Response (CCR).

If you require accommodations, please email info@ovwa.org by May 31. This training is preapproved for CEU’s from OAN, NACP, and the State of Ohio CSWMFT Board….
