Supporting Ohio’s Victim Advocates with EFT: A Training by Dr. Maria Ortner

On February 12, 2025, the Ohio Victim Witness Association (OVWA) welcomed Dr. Maria Ortner, Global Director of the Tapping Solution Foundation, for a special Webinar Wednesday focused on Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)—often called “tapping.”

EFT is a gentle, evidence-informed practice that combines light tapping on acupressure points with mindful attention to emotions. It has been shown to help calm the nervous system, reduce stress, and build resilience—skills that are essential for professionals who support survivors of crime and trauma.

“Self-care is an inside job,” Dr. Ortner reminded attendees. “When we regulate our own emotions, we’re better able to serve others.”

During the interactive training, Dr. Ortner introduced the history of EFT and explained how it works: tapping sends a calming signal to the amygdala, the brain’s alarm system, helping the body shift out of “fight or flight.” She highlighted research indicating that tapping may lower stress hormones and improve clarity in challenging moments.

Participants explored:

  • Why self-care matters for advocates and allied professionals, especially when supporting victims of domestic violence and other trauma.
  • Step-by-step EFT basics, including the key tapping points and simple setup statements.
  • Practical tips—like grounding, staying hydrated, and checking in with yourself before and after tapping—to maximize its benefits.
  • Ways to integrate tapping into both personal routines and client support.

Dr. Ortner also shared stories of using EFT with diverse communities, from schools to frontline responders, underscoring how accessible and adaptable the technique can be.

We extend heartfelt thanks to Dr. Ortner for sharing her expertise, and to The Tapping Solution Foundation for their commitment to providing tools that support the well-being of people everywhere.
