ODVN – Meeting Survivors at the Intersections of Domestic Violence & Human Trafficking

Hosted by the Ohio Domestic Violence Network
This presentation is designed to equip victim advocates with a deeper understanding of the critical overlap between domestic violence and human trafficking. Although often categorized separately, these forms of abuse frequently coexist, creating complex safety and support needs for survivors. We will explore how traffickers leverage tactics commonly seen in intimate partner violence—such as isolation, economic control, emotional manipulation, and threats—to recruit, maintain control, and prevent disclosure. Advocates will learn practical strategies for recognizing crossover red flags, conducting trauma-informed screenings, and responding safely when trafficking may be present in a domestic violence case. The session also addresses barriers that prevent survivors from seeking help, including fear of retaliation, legal concerns, system mistrust, and cultural dynamics. Participants will leave with tools to strengthen coordinated community responses, enhance survivor autonomy, and provide holistic, empowerment-based support for individuals experiencing both domestic violence and human trafficking.
Cost: Free for members (DV member program, Organizational, Individual); $20 for non-members
Registration ends January 16th
